JUBILEE COMMERCIAL COMPLEX
The design of the commercial block at Chandani Chowk tries to create an intervention in this densely packed area while also adding value to its context. The concept takes cues from its immediate neighboring landmarks – Red fort and Jama Masjid. The design intends to act as new center for commerce in the neighborhood.
The ground floor stores have open access to the street. Whereas building on the upper floor is wrapped in a secondary skin. This external permeable screen lets light and wind through while also defining the edges and the planes of the building.
The vertical members are arranged at varying distance to break its repetitiveness and creating a dynamic visual image of the façade.
The entrance breaks from the otherwise busy exterior and provides relief from the vertical layers. The long glass entrance screen is abstracted from the traditional “jaali” pattern common in the heritage context.
